The Shell That Waited
Nel pressed both hands in the sand. The sand was cool and gritty. Warm water slid over their knees. The sea was quiet tonight. Mo floated beside them, slow and calm. Plip. A drop fell from the rock. Plip. Nel looked up and smiled.
Nel found a shell in the shallows. It was round. It was closed tight. Nel held it in two hands. Mo came close to look. Nel pulled. The shell stayed shut. Plip, said the rock. Plip. Nel put the shell down gently.
Nel set the shell in a warm pool. Then Nel sat very still. Mo sat still too. The water went smooth as glass. We can wait, Mo. We can wait. Plip. Plip. A tiny crab walked by. Nel watched it go.
The moon came up over the water. It laid a white path on the sea. Nel counted slow bubbles. One. Two. Three. Mo blinked his sleepy eyes. Plip, said the rock. Plip. The shell did not open yet.
Nel did not pull. Nel did not poke. Nel sang a little humming song. Mo swayed in the warm water. Small fish came to hear. We can wait, Mo. We can wait. Plip. Then something moved in the pool.
The shell opened. Just a little. Just a slow, small crack. Inside was a soft blue light. Like a moon in a cup. Nel did not touch it. Nel only looked. Mo looked too. Plip, said the rock.
Nel lay down in the warm shallows. The shell rocked in its little pool. We can wait, Mo. We can wait. Mo tucked his head in close. The blue light grew small. Plip. The blue light went out. Nel slept.
