The Hum Over the Hill
The rain stopped. The sky went soft and pink. Tam climbed the cloud stairs. Wisp drifted just ahead. The steps were fluffy and warm. Then Tam stopped. "Hum, hum, hum," said something far away. Tam listened. The sound came again. Wisp glowed brighter. Tam wanted to find it.
"Listen, Wisp. There it goes again." Tam climbed the soft white hill. Wisp floated beside them and glowed brighter. Hum, hum, hum. The sound was warm and slow. It came from over the top. Tam went up. Wisp went too. The wind pushed gently at their backs.
At the top there were puddles of rain. Tam stepped around them, one by one. Each puddle held a little moon. Hum, hum, hum. The sound was closer now. Wisp drifted ahead and glowed. Tam smiled. Tam followed the hum.
Then Tam saw it. A big soft cloud sat in the quiet. Three tiny clouds lay on its lap. The big cloud rocked them, slow and slow. Hum, hum, hum. That was the sound. It was a sleepy song. Tam sat down very quietly.
Tam hummed too. Small and soft. Hum, hum, hum. Wisp glowed warm and low beside them. One tiny cloud yawned. One tiny cloud went still. The last one closed its eyes. The big cloud hummed on and on.
The wind lay down. The sky went deep and blue. Tam grew heavy and slow. Wisp drifted close to Tam's cheek. "Listen, Wisp. There it goes again." Hum, hum, hum. Far away, and kind.
Tam lay down on the warm cloud stairs. The hum went on, soft and slow. Wisp curled around Tam's hand and glowed. Tam held on. "Listen, Wisp. There it goes again." The sky held them both.
