Liam’s feet pattered—pitter-pat!—over the mossy, squishy floor of the Enchanted Forest, his sparkly silver sock peeking out of his left shoe. He giggled as he spun, chasing a whirling, twirly leaf that zipped and dipped between the trunks. Sunbeams jumped through the canopy, making everything dappled and golden, and somewhere in the ferns, a whoop-whoop called out, as if the trees were playing hide-and-seek with the wind. Liam’s toolbelt jingled with every skip—he loved to give it a little tap-tap for luck, which was his curious quirk. Now, if you were there, you’d see a squishy patch where the moss looked puffier than a pillow, and in that patch sat a being woven from midnight blue and winking star-threads, their hat tipped sideways like a teapot. This was Snorble, the Dream Keeper. Snorble’s voice always sounded like bubble-popping and sometimes, to think, they would twirl one of their own whiskers into a question mark. "Oodly-doodly, young Liam! Humming feet tonight, aye?" Snorble trilled, fishing out a teacup from under their hat. And so, the chase and the chat began—right in the middle of the leafy, leapy night! Who knows what else might tumble out when the sock-tapping starts?
Just as Liam gave his lucky toolbelt another tap-tap, his sparkly silver sock tickled against a soft squish—sproing!—and a tiny round door zipped open in the moss, making the ground go zzzzzt. A cloud of snicker-bubbles floated up, popping with tiny giggles. Snorble’s whiskers curled, and they clapped their mitteny hands. "Hootle-rootle! That’s a Sockhole! Only ticklish toes and apologetic hearts can find it!" Liam’s nose wrinkled. “A sockhole?” he asked, kneeling and peering at the doorway, which shimmered like soap-suds and smelled faintly of warm toast. “Sockhole doors go to slip-slap lands where dreams are kept secret,” Snorble whispered, voice bubbling. Liam’s eyes grew wide as two puddles. He pulled out his wooden periscope (for peeking sideways), stuck it in the door, and blinked. Inside, the colors fizzed and spun. “Shall we?” asked Snorble, twisting their whisker into a spring. The refrain: "Tap-tap and peek, what will we seek?" hummed about like a song on the wind.
With a squidge and a pop, both tumbled through the Sockhole—Liam’s toolbelt jangling, Snorble’s hat flipping like a pancake. They landed with a fwump! on a marshmallow-soft path, flanked by pajamas that danced and socks that wiggled in the breeze. The air smelled of bedtime milk and sounded like distant yawns. Liam bounced, bouncing always made him braver, and gave his toolbelt a tap-tap for extra courage. Snorble wobbled along, their hat wobbling twice as much, sometimes spinning in lazy circles. “Welcome to Pajamaland! Mind the twirling trousers—they love to tie in knots!” Snorble chortled. Pajamas of every pattern—polka-dot, zigzag, even ones sprouting tiny umbrellas—bobbed and dozed. “Let’s follow the rippley river!” Liam said, spotting a silvery thread of water that sparkled with sleepy stars. So off they went, tap-tap and wobble, socks swishing, the refrain singing, "Tap-tap and peek, what will we seek?"
Soon, they reached a river, but—oh dear!—the bridge was a single, wobbling sock stretched between the banks, stripes zigzagging like a giggle. On the far side, a grumpy pair of pajama pants glared, arms folded. “No crossing! You forgot to say sorry for stepping on my toe-thread last night!” thundered the pants in a deep, rumbly grump. Liam’s sparkly sock bounced nervously. He rubbed his toolbelt and remembered the refrain: "Tap-tap and peek, what will we seek?" This time he added, “Maybe… a way to make things right?” He took a breath, stood tall, and sang a tiny, wobbly “I’m sorry for the toe-thread squish.” The bridge sock puffed up, growing sturdy and bright. Snorble, twirling their whisker, sang backup—“So sorry, so stripey, let’s cross this bridgey!” In the soft bridge-light, the river shushed and shimmied and Liam’s heart felt light as feathers. A sorry, it seemed, was just enough to make the widest river crossable—tap-tap and peek, what did they seek? Why, a friend waving from the other side, of course!
On the other side, the grumpy pants broke into a jiggly dance and handed Liam a button badge shaped like a bridge. “For brave sorries,” they rumbled, now sounding jolly. Liam pinned it to his toolbelt. Snorble yawned a twinkle, and the Pajamaland sky twirled itself gently into a tunnel of stars. “Time to tiptoe home, tap-tap and peek, what dreams shall we keep?” Snorble murmured, gathering a handful of floating clouds for the journey back. Liam’s sparkly sock glowed like a lantern as they floated up, up, through the sockhole. On the other side, the Enchanted Forest was breathing softly, leaves whispering hush-hush. Liam tucked the badge under his pillow, gave his toolbelt a drowsy tap-tap, and Snorble curled their whisker into a sleepy spiral. The refrain drifted into a lullaby: "Tap-tap and peek, what dreams shall we keep?" The forest faded, gentle and giggly, settling the night with a giggle and a snore.
