Pssst! Lean close, little listener. I know a secret about the wiggly woods—where the leaves giggle and the moss feels like tickle-fur on your toes. Only you and I know what happens there at sunrise, when the dew tastes like lemon drops and the air smells like peppermint and pine cones. That’s where Step-Tip-Toe lives, the boy who never walks, only tiptoes everywhere, hop, hop, hop, making his necklace of buttons clackety-click like a pocketful of dancing beetles.
Every morning, Step-Tip-Toe tiptoes to the biggest root and says, “Button-bounce, button-bounce, what’s today’s secret sound?” Sometimes, a blue-fuzzy squirrel named Moppet pops up, tail twirling like a cupcake swirl. Moppet chirrups, “Got any crumbs? Or jellybeans? Or socks with holes? I like ‘em!”
Their giggles float high as treehouses. Moppet’s nose wiggles, Step-Tip-Toe’s toes wiggle, too. But today, the air feels fizzier than a lemonade bubble bath. Something odd is about to happen—shh, don’t blink or you’ll miss it!
Step-Tip-Toe’s big toe taps a lump in the moss—boing! Out pops a round red button, bigger than his nose. The woods hush. Even the wind stops to listen. Moppet’s eyes go googly-wide. “What’s that? Is it tasty?”
Step-Tip-Toe leans close. His tiptoe-chant begins, “Button-bounce, button-bounce, what’s today’s secret sound?” The button quivers. Suddenly—it giggles! Not a grown-up giggle, but a hiccupy-wiggle giggle that makes the grass hop. The button spins, and a door blooms in the tree, covered in teeny-tiny rainbow doors, each with a squeaky knob.
Moppet throws acorn hats in the air, shouting, “First to find jellybeans wins!” Step-Tip-Toe, grinning, spins on his toes three times (that’s his special thinking dance, try it if you want secrets to appear!), then reaches for the biggest knob. The woods sparkle—where will the giggle-door go?
With a snickity-snack, the giggle-door swings open! A world of jellybean paths wobbles on the other side, shimmering in every color and a few Step-Tip-Toe had never seen before—like zizzle and brumbleberry blue. The air smells like warm cookies. Step-Tip-Toe tiptoes in, socks squishing on bouncy jellybeans.
Moppet zips through, flips upside down, and whoops, “Bet you can’t find the sock bush!” Suddenly, sock-shaped leaves dangle above, striped and spotty and wiggly. Step-Tip-Toe does his thinking dance—one spin, two, three!—then spies a bush where socks grow in pairs. He giggles, "Button-bounce, button-bounce, socks for every dance!"
Moppet pinches a sock, and—pop!—ten more socks sprout. But every time Step-Tip-Toe tries to pick a sock, the bush wriggles away, leading him down twisty paths. The jellybeans squish and squeak underfoot, and that silly giggle echoes: "Button-bounce, button-bounce, follow the funny sound!"
The sock bush zips into a clearing where a single, shiny button blossoms on a stump. Moppet bounces in, tail waggling, and chirrups, “Trade you! One jellybean for your brightest button. It’s the silly rule!”
Step-Tip-Toe hesitates, fingers circling his button necklace. His brightest button is shaped like a twinkling star. He tiptoes in a slow circle, necklace jingling. “Button-bounce, button-bounce, share to see what grows!”
He slips off the star button and gives it to Moppet, who flips and plops it into the stump. Zap! The giggle-door tree stretches up, up, up—branches catching sunlight, sock leaves waving, jellybeans sparkling. At the tip-top, a new button blossoms, bigger and brighter than before. Moppet cackles, "You did it, tiptoe-boy! Now the door is for everyone who shares a star!"
By now, the jellybean paths glow soft and sleepy. Step-Tip-Toe, barefoot, nestles into a puddle of socks, Moppet curled in the crook of his arm. Above, the new button glimmers, lighting the gentle giggle-door for all nighttime tiptoers.
The breeze hums like a lullaby, the grass sighs shhhhh. Step-Tip-Toe yawns, tiptoeing one last time as his eyelids flutter like moth wings. Moppet snores, "zzzzip-zap-zoo," nose tucked under a jellybean leaf. If you listen, you’ll hear the refrain, "Button-bounce, button-bounce, gifts grow with the rain." The light fades to snuggly dusk, and the wiggly woods breathe a secret just for you—so hush, little dreamer, let the giggles carry you to sleep…
